Welcome to Budo-zen!
I am Hikone, the representative of “Budo-zen”.
“Budo-zen” means, to dance (舞 “Bu”) while moving (動 “Do”) in a state of Zen (禅= meditation).
We perform dances at Japanese shrines as part of Shinto ritual. This is called “Miko-mai” and a “Miko” is a woman who is engaged to the divine work at a shrine.
The difference between ordinary dance and Miko-mai is, first of all, whether or not the brain is in a state of Zen (meditation) when dancing.
And the way the body is used is also different.
In Miko-mai, we don’t use large outer muscles that we use when dancing or playing sports.
Throughout Miko-mai, our bodies are used in the same way as we do in “Aiki-do”, Sumo wrestling, or Reiki-healing.
This physical condition is called “Namba”, and is a common way in the traditional Japanese martial arts and dance.
We, at Budo-zen, offer experimental lessons where you can learn the basics of this traditional Japanese method.
